County Attorney 2008-Why Vote for James?

Action, not talk. A plan for the future.

I have been asked, if I am elected, what is my plan for the current employees of the Wise County Attorney's Office.  I have worked with each member of the office for several years and I can honestly say that I would be proud to have any one of them on my staff.  If elected, I do not have any plans for personnel changes and I do not forsee any changes in the future.  I do have plans for new things in the office (see below) and I will need the support of an excellent team to make it all happen.

1. Officer Training Program
- Local law enforcement professionals make many sacrifices to protect and serve this county.  It is time that Wise County prosecutors do the same.

- Every single month, I will sacrifice my time outside the County Attorneys office and host  training with updates on current law and procedure to ensure that our officers are always on the cutting edge of the law.  This includes:

“In court” real time training for officers so a case is never lost on the skilled interrogation of defense attorneys.

“real world” training on roadside stops, field sobriety, and investigation.

2.  Merchant Forum
- Wise County continues to grow at an exponential rate and our merchants are plagued with theft and hot checks. This is very disruptive and costly to local businesses.

- Only with a joint effort by the County Attorney and local merchants can we resolve these problems.

- I believe a quarterly forum with local merchants and the County Attorney is the first step in planning, preventing, and prosecuting theft and hot checks for our merchants.

3.  County Forum
- Do you know your elected officials?  Why not?

- Do you know who to contact in the city or county if you have a problem?  Why not?

- Do you know your local law enforcement professionals?  Why not?

- I want you to know me.  I want you to know your city and county officials.  I want you to know your local law enforcement professionals.  I will sponsor a yearly open house, so that when you see me and your elected officials outside their office, you can say “hello” instead of “hey, isn’t that guy a ______________ (insert title) for Wise County?”
What is the job of the County Attorney?

The County Attorney is the chief legal advisor to the county.  This includes civil, criminal, and administrative duties, not just misdemeanor criminal cases.

The job of the Wise County Attorney requires more than prosecuting cases and collecting hot checks.

Resolution of these issues and serving the citizens of Wise County requires:

1)Involvement in the Community, and

2)Experience in many areas of law

1.  Community Involvement

Serving Wise County means being involved in some aspect of the community outside of your job.

For the past 5 years, I have donated time and effort to several programs, including Wise County Teen Court, Domestic Violence Task Force, Wise Youth Today, and Wise County JuvenileProbation.

As County Attorney, I will continue to serve Wise County and continue to donate my time and effort to programs that benefit the youth and citizens of Wise County

The County Attorney must have experience in criminal, family, civil litigation, and appellate law.

It is impossible to efficiently perform the job of the County Attorney without experience in each area of the law. Simply practicing in one area just doesn’t cut it.

I did not consider myself a good candidate for office until I had represented clients and litigated cases in several disciplines. Experience is critical to the performance of the County Attorney.

1. Was the candidate involved and already serving your county before announcing that they were seeking a county office?
2. Does the candidate have a stated plan for improvements and changes that benefit law enforcement, merchants, and citizens?
3.
Compare the real world experience of each of the candidates. How much experience does the candidate have in other areas of the law?

On March 4, 2008, vote for the candidate who is active, involved, and dedicated to the future of your county.
